New Zealand General Election to be held on 14 October 2023

The 2023 New Zealand general election will be held on Saturday, 14 October 2023. This is the date that all eligible voters will cast their votes to elect the 120 members of the New Zealand House of Representatives.

Key dates

  • Writ day: 12 September 2023. This is the day on which the Governor-General issues a writ for the election.
  • Nominations close: 19 September 2023. This is the last day for candidates to nominate themselves to stand for election.
  • Early voting begins: 2 October 2023. This is when voters can cast their votes at advance voting centres.
  • Overseas voting begins: 2 October 2023. This is when voters who are overseas can cast their votes by post or online.
  • Election day: 14 October 2023. This is the day on which all eligible voters must cast their votes.

Eligibility to vote

To be eligible to vote in the 2023 general election, you must be:

  • A New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Aged 18 years or over on election day
  • On the electoral roll

Overseas voters

New Zealand citizens who are living overseas are also eligible to vote in the 2023 general election. They can vote by post or online.

How to vote

There are three ways to vote in the 2023 general election:

  • On election day at a polling place
  • Early voting at an advance voting centre
  • By post or online (for overseas voters)
